The man in the novel was Sebastian Rodrigues, a Portuguese Jesuit priest sent to Japan in the 17th century. He was there to minister to Japanese Catholics suffering under a brutal regime and also to find out what had happened to his mentor, a priest rumored to have renounced the faith under torture. I look forward to seeing the movie, but the fact that Scorcese made THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST definitely puts a damper on my excitement.

Finally saw the movie. Liked it, but didn’t love it. The theology was very muddled. Bishop Barron does a great review of it on YouTube.
